The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, aside from his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
