Roughly fifty automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.

Law enforcement say they were contacted late on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.

The substance had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Law enforcement then located numerous other marked vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement report preliminary tests show the liquid was probably blood from a person.

"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; authorities are presently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the event," they commented.

Municipal representatives stated they were working "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the residents for tips.

A high-ranking official stated the incident rendered him speechless and needed to be addressed promptly.

"This event hits the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on a platform, referring to the death of nine victims by a assailant aiming at residents of migrant background in 2020.
